Apps for Office - the hidden gem that's easier than you think
Level: 400
Track: Developer
Most developers know that it's now possible to develop Apps for Office which are based on core web technologies - HTML, CSS and JavaScript. But the take-up appears to be fairly limited - why is that when development and deployment (even in the enterprise) are fairly easy? This session takes a renewed look at Apps for Office, now that the Word, Excel and Mail APIs have been enhanced and the app model is no longer the weird new kid on the block. Some cool demos are involved, including a Word task pane app which analyses the contents of a document to find you similar items across your SharePoint environment/tenancy whilst you're working with the document.

Configuring SharePoint Hybrid - Part 1 - Using Search in SharePoint Online
Level: 300
Track:
With the move to Office 365, one of the most common questions is “how can SharePoint Online be integrated with an existing On-Premises implementation of SharePoint?”.

One of the available options is to configure Hybrid Search, this provides the ability to provide search results from SharePoint Online in On-Premises and vice versa. One of the key advantages of using Hybrid Search is that a single consistent Search Center can be provided to end users that can surface search results from both SharePoint Online and On-Premises.

This session will provide a demo heavy walkthrough of the steps required to configure Outbound Hybrid Search between SharePoint 2013 On-Premises and Office 365, this functionality will enable end users to search content that is hosted in an Office 365 tenant from a Search Center that is hosted within an On-Premises SharePoint 2013 implementation.

Getting SQL Spinning with SharePoint - Best Practices for the Backend
Level: 200
Track: IT Pro
Fact. If you're on-premises, you're reliant on SQL Server.
Fact. Performance problems in SharePoint are most commonly caused by a poorly configured or ineffectively optimised SQL Server backend.

Compiled from his experiences in designing, deploying and managing truly Cloud-scale instances of SharePoint and SQL Server this session is one not to miss if you want to squeeze the best out of your SharePoint power-plant.
Getting Started with the Office 365 API
Level: 200
Track: Developer
The Office 365 APIs make it possible for both websites and native applications to consume Office 365 data. In SharePoint 2013 we got the ability to insert external apps into Excel and Outlook; now the investment is to enable your applications to consume Office data over the wire using REST/OData for data transport and OAuth for authentications and authorization.
This session will provide down to earth guide on how to start using the Files API for consuming SharePoint 2013 data and the Exchange API for accessing mail and calendar information, as well as how to utilize the new registering and authentication features.

Goal Alignment in the Hybrid SharePoint Estate
Level: 100
Track: IT Professional, Information Worker, Business Tracks
In any organization, employees represent the most valuable organisational asset, so ensuring SharePoint meets the collaborative challenges and productivity needs in using the platform will ultimately affect an organization’s profitability and overall success of a SharePoint program. As we move more towards Hybrid estates, or are considering Cloud based deployments for SharePoint, Office 365, SaaS or PaaS, aligning the people and the objectives becomes financially intertwined.

This session will focus on how to improve that critical aspect of SharePoint project incepetion and a key facet of Enterprise frameworks such as TOGAF; Goal Alignment. A lack of Goal Alignment in the inception phase is where many SharePoint projects fail before they start. It can be a very misunderstood Governance area outside of the familiar IT domain, and can pull kicking and screaming the mystical SharePoint Architect into the uncomfortable world of business. It is where we set the measures to prove we have delivered something of value, and one of the earliest facet of governance where the business and IT world collide head on. It is the tool for aligning IT and business goals.

Join honourary MVP for the day "Dilbert" and his work colleagues as they assist in explaining what Goal Alignment is, and the benefits it can bring, to stop your Hybrid SharePoint Projects failing before they even begin.

How To Build A Knowledge Sharing Culture & Unleash The Full Potential of SharePoint, Office365 and Yammer In Your Organisation
Level: 200
Track: Information Worker, Social, Business Tracks
According to industry analysts Gartner (2012), “Social Enterprise is implemented 80% through organisation culture and 20% through technology”, but there’s little practical guidance available when it comes to ‘Culture’.

For technologies like SharePoint and Yammer “user adoption” and “engagement” just aren’t enough. Transferring existing practices onto a new media delivers little or no value. For example a recent case study of an organisation considered an exemplar of social business concluded that although the social technologies offered considerable promise for redefining the workplace, realising that potential would require a redesign of the socio-technical managerial system.

This session will present a framework which will enable you to diagnose and overcome the cultural barriers to knowledge sharing and collaboration within your organisation. Packed with stories and lessons learned from world class organisations in this session you’ll learn the secrets that will enable you to unleash the full potential of SharePoint, Office365 and Yammer in you organisation.

Intranet in one hour
Level: 100
Track: Information Worker, Social, Business Tracks
I wish to build a usable intranet in one hour using a blank office 365 tenant (not a pre populated Contoso example). I intend to check the following boxes,
1. Social
2. News / Internal Comms
3. Team / Project sites

When I get further through the planning more elements may be included such as multi device or audience interaction.

I believe that building an usable intranet in one hour is possible and should dispel the myth that it takes months of work to achieve anything usable in office 365. The session will be 100% live demo. As for my past 2 sessions it's, "Live or die"

Selecting the right client-side development approach
Level: 200
Track: Developer
Developing SharePoint solutions has evolved significantly over the past few years, not least because of the impact of Office 365, where traditional server-side farm solutions are not an option. The constraints of the app model and the shift of code from server to client side has resulted in a number of innovative approaches to SharePoint development.

This session will provide an introduction to some of these approaches including use of Knockout.js and Angular.js in a SharePoint context. The options available will be compared and contrasted, highlighting the pros and cons with demos of key elements. Choosing the wrong framework can have a significant negative impact in terms of productivity, maintainability and efficiency. If you are currently developing or considering developing SharePoint solutions using JavaScript frameworks this session will provide an overview of the options available to help you make the right choices.

Set Your Code Free - SharePoint Apps for the Mobile World
Level: 300
Track: Developer
Organizations are embracing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), and now we have to deliver SharePoint to these devices. And people don't just want a website any more - they want an app! This session is about building solutions for client devices. It's not just responsive design - we're going to look at technologies that allow us to build client apps for multiple target platforms with a significant amount of code re-use. We'll also use design patterns and data-binding on the client side to make our apps maintainable and scalable. And we'll look at tooling that allows us to do the majority of our work in Visual Studio 2013. This is a field where the technology is changing rapidly - almost daily. This session will help you get up to speed, or to keep up!
SharePoint and Dynamics CRM: Exploring the Integration
Level: 200
Track: IT Professional, Information Worker
SharePoint and Dynamics CRM offer some interesting integration possibilities but also a number of challenges. Often a solution can be delivered using either of the products, and the integration is not as easy as you may think. This session therefore explores what roles the different products perform well at, and where there is potential cross over. Specific focus will be given to the document management integration to understand the functionality and its limitations.

Other integration areas will be discussed including Yammer, Workflow, BCS and Business Intelligence. The different deployment methods for the technologies will be reviewed and what impact these have on integration. Finally guidance will be given around achieving successfully integrated delivery of both SharePoint and Dynamics CRM solutions.
SharePoint Apps for the IT Pro - What you need to know
Level: 200
Track: IT Professional
By now, every SharePoint IT Pro is probably aware of the fact that Full Trust Code (aka the farm solution) is not cool anymore. We can’t really say that we regret Microsoft’s choice for the new App model: On far too many occasions we had to watch our beloved and carefully nurtured SharePoint farm go down because some developer type messed up big time - “But it works on my machine!” Running code outside of SharePoint that can still interact with content within SharePoint sounds trivial at first but it absolutely isn’t. In this session you’ll learn how to prepare your infrastructure to run SharePoint Hosted apps reliably.
