JavaScript best practices, APP model and On Premises
Level: 300

Whether you develop applications for on premises or in the app model one thing is clear. You need to write JavaScript. The language is hated by many, loved by a few and dismissed by almost all. However in today's world, any web technology development project will contain at least some JavaScript.

My aim for this session is to bring my development experience, and my experience as the Lead Developer at RencoreAB on SPCAF to demonstrate how development differs in JavaScript depending on the context you write it. How the structure works, and bring in some groundwork to ensure faster development and less overhead due to bugs and issues that can arise.

In this session you will learn:
- The development patterns in detail and how they work, so you can keep your code maintainable
- Top best practices for writing your code, for performance and security
- How working in each model cloud/hybrid/on premises effects the way you develop
- Governance decisions when choosing frameworks, and how to interweave this into your support model

INTRODUCTION
With collaboration services transforming from SharePoint into Office 365, the need for governance are changing. New competences are required to provide solid information management in the cloud and other competences are just not so relevant anymore.

Implementing governance practices is hard – but the real hard part is to maintain them. Today, few companies have structured practices for applying and maintaining policies across the entire SharePoint service. This session will show you how it can be done in a way that is both practical and makes the value of governance visible and relevant for IT, Management and Users.

Finally, we look at how to support a good governance methodology with the tools available. Learn about new governance challenges in Office 365 and SharePoint 2016 and get a grasp at how Microsoft is addressing some of these with Office 365 Compliance Center and some of the other tools that are available to you.

BENEFITS
Participants will learn about challenges, experiences and successes from a large public organization with a challenging governance need. What are the hard issues and how can you solve them in an environment where both SharePoint and Office 365 are vital technologies?

Learn about hands-on methodologies and tools to providing the right level of governance, and get awareness of new topics introduced with Office 365 and SharePoint Server 2016.

Provisioning SharePoint Artifacts
Level: 300
Track: Developer
Deploying your SharePoint solution often includes more than just uploading your customizations alone. The solution usually contains components like lists with items, templates or even entire intranet structures with multiple subwebs. What are your options nowadays when facing such tasks? Where we used to take comfort in using site definitions and webtemplates, we now try to avoid such XML based provisioning. Especially since we need to target both on-premises and Office 365 deployments. In this session we examine several code based techniques for getting the job done. We look at the Office 365 Developer Patterns and Practices, but also some viable alternatives for controlled deployment of artifacts and webmodels.

Stop your SharePoint CSS becoming a di-SASS-ter today!
Level: 300
Track: Developer, Business
CSS can get overly complex and unwieldy very quickly - especially on SharePoint Projects. To achieve the SharePoint branding you desire, often results in thousands of lines of CSS across many files. This approach is error prone and also a maintenance nightmare! However, there is a better way…
SASS (“Syntactically Awesome Style Sheets”) is fast becoming the preferred approach to develop your CSS! SASS is an extension to CSS which arms you with programming features such as variables, functions, loops and many more.
Join my session and I will take you from a complete SASS novice to someone that knows where SASS fits and how to use it with SharePoint.
Key Takeaways :
- I will explain what SASS is and where you would use it.
- How to use SASS to brand SharePoint without requiring lengthy deployments.
- How to create simple Rich Text Editor Styles using mixins and includes.
- How to apply a Grid layout and make it Responsive.
- How to structure your branding correctly to make it more maintainable.
- How CSS 4 fits into the picture and does it make SASS obsolete?
